Ingredients

  • 1 large russet potato
  • 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne optional
  • optional - ketchup and mayo for dipping

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 C).
  • Use a spiralizer to create curly potato strips.

  • If potato curls are longer than 4 to 5 inches, snap them into smaller pieces.
Spiralized potato slices being torn in half.
  • Add the spiralized potatoes and olive oil to a large parchment lined sheet pan then add the salt, onion powder, paprika, pepper, cumin, and optional cayenne and toss to combine. Spread into a single layer.
Spiralized pieces of potato tossed with spices on a parchment lined sheet pan.
  • Bake for 15 minutes and check - if there are any crispy pieces remove them and put the rest of the potatoes back in the oven.
Half baked curly fries on a sheet pan being tossed with tongs.
  • Bake for another 5 to 10 minutes or until all the potatoes are done.

  • Serve with your choice of condiment - I like a mixture of mayonnaise and ketchup.

Notes

Storage - leftovers can be saved for up to 3 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container. I highly recommend reheating in the oven to crisp up the fries - microwaving them will make the soggy.
Cooking Tips - When you spiralize potatoes, you get three distinctive spirals - the tight coils, the larger looser coils (the most prevalent kind), and the smaller edge pieces (they crisp the fastest). They can over-crisp quickly though if you don't watch them. About 15 minutes in, start pulling the ones that look like they are getting done.
