Salad Features
- You'll love this classic salad's simplicity and the light, refreshing taste.
- The creamy and salty taste of the feta balances the tangy flavors of the lime juice and zest. The shallot slices add the slightest amount of a punch and a bit of a crunch.
- The beauty of this salad comes from the bright color of the gorgeous blood oranges, but if you can't find them, you can substitute them with regular oranges.
Blood Orange Winter Salad Ingredients
This salad is bursting with citrus fruits. Rather than making a blood orange dressing, I prefer to add the oranges right into the salad and mix up a flavorful honey lime dressing.
Here's everything you'll need:
- Baby greens - A spring mix or arugula/spinach mix of salad greens works best for this one.
- Blood oranges - Juicy blood oranges are the main event of this salad. Check your local farmers market if you can't find them at your grocery store during their season. If you need a substitute, Cara Caras or clementines could work.
- Avocado - Sliced avocado adds a creaminess to this salad and makes it more filling by providing healthy fat.
- Shallot - Shallots provide a nice onion flavor without being too bold. Though I highly recommend a shallot for this recipe, if you don't have one on hand, a bit of red onion could work.
- Feta cheese - The saltiness and creaminess of feta is just delicious with the blood oranges and citrusy dressing. Use a vegan feta if you need to be dairy free.
- Homemade dressing - Olive oil, lime juice, lime zest, honey, salt and pepper will be mixed together in a small bowl to create this flavorful salad.

Blood Orange Salad FAQs
I don't recommend making this salad ahead of time. The avocado doesn't stay green long, and it, along with the feta and oranges, will take away the crispness of the salad during storage.
Leftovers can be saved for up to 3 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
Citrus season is generally in the winter months to early spring months, making this a great spring or winter salad.

Notes
- Storage - Leftovers can be saved for up to 3 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
- Preparation Tips - Here's a helpful guide on cutting oranges. I typically cut the ends off, then slice the peel off from top to bottom by slicing down the sides. This is an easy way to remove the pith and peel quickly. Then, I slice the orange into rounds and quarter it to get bite-size pieces.
- Specialty Ingredients - Blood oranges can usually be found at grocery stores (Whole Foods and Trader Joe's often have them) from December through April.
- Recommended Tools - I highly recommend using a sharp chef's knife to cut the rind from the oranges.
- Diet/Allergy Alternatives - If you'd like this recipe to be vegan, leave off the feta cheese (or substitute for vegan cheese) and swap the honey for maple syrup.
